Online .htaccess Password Generator

To set up a secure server sided .htaccess directory protection for any of your web directories, you need to create 2 files within the directory: '.htaccess' and '.htpasswd'. Furthermore you need a good password and we recommend to use an encrypted one.

With the w3easyPWG password generator you may generate secure passwords online, encrypted with the php crypt method:

Now add the following lines to your .htaccess file:

AuthName "secure"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /your/server/path/to/.htpasswd
require valid-user

'your/server/path/to' means 'realpath' or 'absolute path' (see chapter realpath at php.net).

To discover your server path, create a file 'serverpath.php' and write the following line to the file:

Now upload the file to the folder, where your '.htpasswd' file is located and call the file.
The absolute path to the folder will be displayed. Delete the file afterwards!

Btw: If you need to establish htaccess directory protection frequently, you might as well consider using our w3easyProtect script.
